Field of Gold
#358 - Oil - 15.7” x 15.7” (40 x 40cm) This is the larger version of the smaller, original painting that I will post soon. I liked the composition so much that I just had to paint it in this large format.

BUS 472 - #3
#309 - 6" X 8" - Oil
Finally it was a sunny winter's morning. With clear skys and sunlight this meant that I had lots of contrast in my tonal values and the colours were more saturated. ( compare studies #1and #2 ) What I really liked was the dark blue colour of the road as a result of heavy rain overnight. By the time I finished the painting the sun had dried it out to its usual grey colour. These studies cleary show how the same subject can look so different under diverse weather conditions.

BUS 472 - #2
#308 - 6" X 8" - Oil
Another grey day but this time with misty rain. Still not much contrast in my tonal values. I was hoping for heavier rain so I'd have lots of reflections on the road...... but that didn't happen. I almost decided not to paint this one because I thought it would be too much like the first study. But then I realized that even if the weather is similar, no two paintings will be the same. Which is one of the reasons why I'm doing these studies in the first place. The road surface is a lot cooler compared to #1 and the bus lights were on making them my lightest lights.

BUS 472 - #1
#307 - 6" X 8" - Oil
I want to work a lot more on my plein air painting so I've set myself a task. I see this view everyday and under all different weather conditions. It's one of the views from my front porch. Not that it's obvious here, but our house is situated on a bend and so the local bus seems to head straight towards us before turning. I wanted the challenge of painting the bus as it passes. So, while waiting for each bus, I paint the landscape and then quickly paint the bus as it momentarily appears and disappears. Sometimes it stops to pick up passengers, sometimes not. I've always liked the idea of painting the same landscape under different weather conditions, and in doing so, finishing up with a small series of paintings. Let's see how it goes!
This was a very grey day. To achieve this effect I made sure there was little contrast in the tonal values and kept all the colours muted.

#303 - 8 X 8 in ( 20.3 X 20.3 cm ) - Oil
It's seems so long since I've painted flowers. I really enjoyed doing these small, white lillies. Hmmm, well I really enjoyed painting the glass bottle too. I just love it when parts of the glass are lost into the background...........if I don't see an edge then I don't paint one. It's all about observation and only painting what you see, not what you know is there.
